What Causes an Outdoor AC Unit to Make a Buzzing Sound?

Air conditioning units can make all types of different noises which can indicate different issues. If you hear a buzzing noise coming from your outdoor air conditioning unit could be caused by a number of different things including loose parts, the condenser fan motor, or possible electrical issues. Below is how each of these problems can affect your AC unit:

Loose Parts:

There are many different parts and pieces which make up your AC unit. Due to the complex system of all the moving parts, if one becomes loose, it can throw off the syncing of the entire unit resulting in a buzzing sound. While this may not seem like a big deal, having loose parts can affect your unit’s performance and lead to other parts breaking or wearing down prematurely.

Condenser Fan Motor:

If you have ever looked in your outdoor AC unit, you may have noticed a large fan inside. This large fan is your condenser fan that blows air from the outside unit when your AC is running. If the blades are not turning on this fan it could be due from loose parts, debris inside the unit or a failing fan.

Electrical Issues:

Electrical issues can also cause your AC unit to produce a buzzing sound. One of the electrical components in your AC unit is the contractor relay switch. The contractor relay switch is a low-voltage switch in your outside unit controlled by the thermostat. It switches on high voltage to your outside unit’s compressor. When this component is failing it can result in a buzzing noise. There are also more serious electrical problems that can result in buzzing noises such as loose or damaged electrical connections. It is important to have a professional come and inspect your unit to determine what is causing any buzzing sounds so the appropriate actions can be made.
